How do you advocate Arts at your school?

Is there a certain advocacy strategy that you have in place that you already do? Is there one you'd like to try but feel you don't have time/energy?

For me it is all about getting student work out and about. The community and my school have been extremely supportive of our program mostly because they love the color and character the kids' artwork brings to the hallways and businesses. I also do an artist of the month that goes in the newspaper so parents see that it is happening. Finally we do an art show where there are family activities, etc. I haven't really had to get into the why art is important talk as people seem to be pretty open minded to it already. For me, it is more a matter of visibility.

My school is very supportive of the Art program, but I do still promote it whenever I can.

I started a blog this year and parents have been loving to see the step by step of projects.
We have a monthly Specialist newsletter that I send to parents with quick highlight from the month.
I show their work as often as possible and always have context and point out what other skills they are learning through each project.

I'm pushing to do murals in my school with my art club kids. This year I plan on doing a pop cap mural to display as well. The community members are really starting to notice and I'm receiving more and more complements, plus lots of voices telling me they want more!

This year I'm also diving into YAM. Right now I'm just doing a spirit week and a few other activities, but next year I want to have an art night at school where parents and their students can come in and create art together!

I see art as not only important for expression and enjoyment but vital for the development of a child's visual perception, spatial perception, fine motor control, divergent thinking and imagination. It is a subject that often does not get the merit it deserves in schools and curriculum building. I am encouraging children how to look really carefully at the world and how you can use the basic elements of art to become confident in drawing and creating. We are developing our Art vocabulary and talk about the Art we display, what works well, why it works. We have a lot of fun.
