I frequently direct students to google "Artists name for kids"
It mostly works at censoring nudity, and we've found a couple of rocking resources that way. I have yet to find an comprehensive, interactive, interesting and well written kids art history site, so I do a lot of pre research and content creating.

Ok: These sites are pretty useful for broad overviews, and they're written simply.

But they don't have a huge selection of subjects/artists.
This one is written at a higher level, and has more artists, and avoids nudity!

NGA has some good resources, but you may want to preview and link to resources since their website is messy. Each lesson tends to have "Bio bytes" inside, so click around.

Yeah, my best advice is creating a webquest of links you found and organized for a variety of artists =/
