One of my co workers does a fantastic AP Drawing project where they use text as value in portrait drawings. There is a phenonimal example of a portrait of MLK Jr. with the value made up of the words from his I have a dream speach. I'm not sure what grade level you are looking for, but I bet you could incorporate them that way.

What a great opportunity to study fonts on the computer or learn calligraphy. A great place to find inspiration is medieval illuminated manuscripts.

I did this with high school students and they were to illustrate the musical artist with the lyrics, mixture of drawing and graphic design elements. My inspiration came from Incredible Art website under the name micrography.
