Multiple Level Worksheet

Quick Draw Challenge

Created on April 20, 2014 by MsAlkire

Like a bell ringer, this is used at the beginning of each class to get the students focused and their creative minds working! I have grades 2-5 do these, and at the end of the year I've started to teach the 1st graders to prep for next year.

THE PLAN
1 session; 15 minutes per session

1. SWBAT use and stretch their creative muscles
2. SWBAT infer and create many possible solutions to creative problems presented

1. Quick Draw Challenge Template
2. Pencil
3. Timer
4. Prompts for Quick Draw Challenge(I use writingprompts.tumblr.com for great ideas, and create my own as well.)

Note: This works like a Quick Write in other classrooms.

1. Students enter classroom, with prompt on the board.
2. Students pass out Quick Draw challenge worksheet which is already located at their table.(I have small color coded folders for each table that the quick draws slide right into.)
3. Students get pencil and read prompt or teacher reads aloud and gives instructions.
4. Timer set for 5 minutes begins and students draw until the timer beeps.
5. Students are silent as this is an individual activity.
6. Collect QD folders from end of the table and put away.
7. Begin main lesson.

This is essentially an entrance slip in which students prove they are ready to work when they enter my classroom. At the end of the 6 weeks, each student receives a grade if they've completed their entire page of Quick Draws.

I had to choose the time for this activity as 15 minutes, but really it should only take 5-6 minutes when the kids are trained and in the habit of doing this each time they walk into the studio.

I came up with this to get the kids focused right at the beginning of class and to also give them a feeling of having a time for creative "free drawing."

There are six boxes, one for each week in the six weeks.

This also helps if I need some extra time to set up painting supplies for the lesson, pass out projects from the week before or organize work from the previous class.
