Matisse Inspired Contrast Design

Students will use their knowledge of shape, contrast, unity, variety, balance, and movement to create an interesting cut paper abstraction using contrast-o paper.

THE PLAN
3 sessions; 80 minutes per session

SWBAT use their knowledge of the elements and principles of design to create 4 sketches of black and white contrast designs.
SWBAT use their understanding of safety to correctly use an x-acto knife to cut their contrast paper.
SWBAT use shape, contrast, unity, variety, and balance to create a cohesive and interesting cut paper design using contrast-o paper.

1. sketch paper
2. contrast-o paper
3. black construction paper, cut to size of contrast-o
4. x-acto knife
5. cutting boards
6. scissors
7. colored construction paper (9"x18") for backing
8. glue stick
9. pencil

1. View and participate in PowerPoint presentation
2. Create 4 sketches (remember to use shapes! NO lines!!) color in the black/white areas.
3. Lightly draw design on WHITE side of the contrast-o paper using pencil
4. use x-acto kine to cut only the white side of the contrast-o! go lightly, then add more pressure if necessary!
5. take black construction paper and cut it to the same size as the contrast-o paper.
6. Peel the white shapes off of the contrast paper and place them on the black paper in the same position. Do this until you have the same image on both pieces of paper, with the colors inverted.
7. mount on a piece of colored construction paper.

I work at an alternative school, and my classes tend to work a lot more slowly than at a regular school. Some teachers could probably get through this lesson in a day with committed students.
