Skull prints on tempera painted backgrounds done with foam plates

THE PLAN
3 sessions; 60 minutes per session

SWBAT paint a patterned background.
SWBAT create a skull drawing.
SWBAT create a skull print using a foam plate.
SWBAT will be able to explain the steps for creating a print.

1. Pacon Premium weight drawing paper
2. tempera paint
3. paint brushes
4. Inovart foam printing plates
5. pencils
6. brayer
7. black water based printing ink (Blick or Speedball)
8. drawing paper

1. Show students a variety of ways to draw skulls and decorate them with patterns. Use Pinterest to generate ideas. (60 minutes)
2. have students choose their favorite drawing. Tape drawing over foam plate. Trace over image to transfer it to the plate. (30 minutes)
3. Paint stripes or a variety of patterns on the Pacon paper using a variety of tempera paint colors. Allow to dry over night. (30 minutes)

4. Demonstrate the printing process: Prepare ink on a plate. Load brayer with ink. Roll ink on foam plate for printing. Press paper with painted background onto the foam plate. Rub the back of the paper with a wooden spoon to transfer the ink to the paper. (5 minutes)
5. Have students create a flow map demonstrating an understanding of the steps for printing. (15 minutes)
6. Allow students to print their plates.(40 minutes)

Formative assessment: students will create a flow map of the printing process.

Students will be assessed on the quality of their design and their utilization of the printing process.
