THE PLAN
5 sessions; 50 minutes per session

• Students learn about the artist Francoise Nielly and create a portrait in her style using their photograph and paint.
• Students demonstrate a variety of painting techniques.

Need these materials? Visit Blick!

1. Prior to lesson take close-up digital portraits of students. Have students think about whether they want a frontal, partial, or side view and/or expression.

2. Introduce the artist Francoise Nielly using teacher made PowerPoint. Discuss abstract and realistic portraits.

3.Demonstrate palette knife painting techniques. Students may choose to use both brushes and palette knives,

4. Trace photograph with a pencil. I have students trace their photo on a window so the light coming through will make it easier to see and trace.

4. Students use palette knives and brushes to paint their portraits. Outline chin, eyes, nose, and mouth with black to paint.
