THE PLAN
2 sessions; 40 minutes per session
1. SWBAT identify and create a heart shape
2. SWBAT differentiate between background and foreground/main image
1. Oil pastel
2. Tempera Paint (I used cakes)
3. White paper
4. Templates/stencils (for differentiation)
1. Give students brief history of Jim Dine as an artist, showing examples of his heart work on the smart board
(If students don't know what a heart looks like I sang this poem while putting hearts on smart board: A heart shows we love, A heart shows we care, bend your fingers into shape, make hearts in the air)
2. Draw large heart on white paper (can be done with pencil first if necessary if not straight to pastel - if student can not draw a heart - use a tracing template)
3. Color the inside of the shape with the oil pastels (this was all we had time for day 1)
4. Discuss how to use tempera cakes with students and washing of brush
5. Paint background of heart with many colors of paint
Students wrote (or verbalized and I wrote) an artist's statement on the back of their artwork or on a paper that I attached to the back filling in one of the following statements:
1) As an artist I learned___
2) I made art like Jim Dine because_____
3) Something new I tried was ________
