Extend a Photograph / Grid Drawing

This is a drawing project that I use with my Drawing II students as a final exam. I typically allow two 47 minute classes to pick an image and lay out their design, and one 90 minute exam period to add color or value.

THE PLAN
2 sessions; 90 minutes per session

-Students will create either a realistic or abstract composition to fit around an image clipping
-Students will create a complete composition in pencil or colored pencil

-Calendar, magazine, or printed images
-Drawing paper
-Pencil
-Colored Pencil
-Ruler

Getting the drawing ready:
1. Choose an image for your extended composition. Realistic images with clear shapes and a simple color scheme will work best. You have to make sure you create a realistic amount of work for yourself.
2. Cut out the part of the image you would like to use in your composition. The image you choose can be up to 9 square inches in size. Your drawing paper will be 6X6” in size.
3. Glue your image to your drawing paper.
4. At this point, you will need to decide if you are keeping your drawing completely realistic, or adding things to the composition to make it more abstract (see example in the hallway with the rainforest and the penguins).
5. Sketch out the basic layout of your design. No value or color may be added until the final exam period!
Final Exam Period:
1. You will use the entire class period to add value or color to your drawing.
2. You will be graded on what you are able to finish in class. Your goal is to complete the entire composition, but if you are taking your time and working to the best of your ability, I will not penalize you for not finishing the entire drawing. Fill out the rubric below and turn it in with you drawing at the end of the exam period.
