Fourth graders learned about world explorers in their classrooms. In art class students learned about different kinds of explorer ships such as the tall clipper ships, viking ships, and even pirate ships. Students created their ship drawings which they used as a template to trace on their tin repousse pictures. The tin repousse pictures were then used as a mold to create a plaster relief of their ships.

Introduce project using a teacher-made PowerPoint depicting a variety of explorer ships.

1. Drawing: Cut paper the same size as the tin sheets to be used for the repousse project. Students will draw a detailed rendering of a ship.

2. Repousse: Students will trace that drawing on to the tin sheet placing a pad of newspaper underneath the tin and using a wooden stylus or pencil to press down.

3. To make the plaster relief: Teacher will mix plaster according to directions on the package. Quickly pour the plaster onto the tin plate, and place a paperclip at the top that can be used to help hang the plaster later. Allow to dry. For elementary students I recomend the teacher should do this part while students color their drawings as plaster dries fast and is hard to work with.

4. Decorating: Students use color pencil to color their ship drawings, permanent markers to color the tin plates, and watercolor to paint the plaster. When finished students will have 3 pieces of artwork based on 1 image.
