Clay Monster Planters

Using a slab technique, students will create clay monsters using cylinders.

THE PLAN
4 sessions; 45 minutes per session

1. SWBAT use a slab technique.
2. SWBAT use score and slip technique to attach clay.
3. SWBAT define form, texture, and proportion.

2-3 days
1. Discuss the artist James DeRosso
2. Have students create a slab rectangle.
3. Then connect the rectangle to make a cylinder using score and slip.
4. Attach a circle piece of clay for the bottom.
5. Add features for eyes, mouth, teeth arms, tail etc...
6. Leave top open and poke hole in bottom for drainage if student decides to plant inside. Could also be used as a pencil holder.
Dry for about two weeks then fire.
7. Glaze and fire again.
