High [9th-12th] Lesson Plan

Clay Totems

This is a lesson I created for my Art I classes. We are building a series of totems in the school's sculpture garden.

THE PLAN
10+ sessions; 45 minutes per session

Students will hand build a clay totem based on their personality traits.
Students will incorporate several clay construction techniques into their totem.
Students will add descriptive words and a traditional totem animal to their design.

Glaze or stain of choice

1. Complete planning sheet
2. Construct paper model
3. Check with paper model occasionally to keep size consistent.
3. Fire and Glaze

Students will be assessed based on attached rubric.

I plan on using a wash of iron oxide and a clear dipping glaze to finish these off and protect them from the Wisconsin weather. We will install the piece in the spring.
