Hans Silvester is a German photographer who documented the beautiful body paintings of the Surma and Mursi peoples of the Omo Valley in southern Ethiopia.

THE PLAN
1. SWBAT learn about the the life, art, and tribal customs of the Surma and Mursi tribes in Ethiopia.

2. SWBAT to create art/photography based on the tribal body paintings.

1. Students watch the PowerPoint and learn about the body paintings of the Surma and Mursi Tribes, as well as about the photographer, Hans Silvester.

2. Art Teachers may use this as a starting point for many different arts activities, they may include:

-Students face paint each other and use a variety of materials to adorn themselves. The teacher can take photographs of their finished work for posterity.

-Students create masks in the likeness of the painted peoples using clay, papier-mâché, paper, plaster, or other materials.

-Students draw portraits of the tribal people and make their own pigments from natural elements to add color.

3. Compare/contrast to other indigenous peoples who decorate themselves such as the Maori in New Zealand, The Yanomami from South America,the American Indians, etc...
