Warm Up: If you had to choose an animal that represents our culture, what would it be and why?

After warm-up discussion, students will watch videos about koi fish, and videos that introduce them to Koi fish motifs in art. They will research the symbolism of the koi fish. Then, students will learn about Gyotaku printmaking and how & why it originated.

Wrap Up: Class discussion, checking for understanding essential questions:
What are the steps of Gyotaku printmaking?
How did Gyotaku printmaking originate?
What do Koi fish represent to the Japanese?
Why do Koi fish appear so frequently in Japanese art?

Class discussion before the end of class will be used as assessment period.
