Plaster cast hands

Students use plaster gauze to cover their hand to create a cast of the hand.

THE PLAN
3 sessions; 40 minutes per session

1.SWBAT define form
2.SWBAT give examples of plaster sculptures of George Segal

1. Plaster gauze strips
2. Warm water
3.acrylic paint

1. See work by George Segal
2 teacher demo how to use plaster
3. Students work with partner to cover hand ( about 25 min)
4. After 2 sessions each student should have a cast of their hand and can paint it

Students will give oral feed back on the process.
As they see Segals work they will work in groups to answer, what do I SEE! THINK! WONDER!


I do this with 3rd grade and up. They love it!

    where are instructions on creating the hand?

    amsaha The hand is created by laying the plaster strips onto of each student's hand, I have them put lotion on the top of the hand, then the partner put the plaster strip in the warm water and starts to lay it onto the hand. Make sure they have 3 layers of strips. There are directions in the plaster gauze on using it. Wait about 7-10 minutes for the plaster to set and then carefully remove it. Hope that helps

    It`s a cool project but I felt like the YouTube video attached was not school appropriate.
