1. To begin the lesson we will watch a video demonstrating what tints and shades are and how to make them. After watching the video we will review the steps to create tints and shades. I will give them the hint to remember that a shade is something that makes a room darker and a shade is a darker version of a color.

2. Students will now practice creating tints and shades on a worksheet. The worksheet will have 3 strips with 5 boxes in each strip. The center square on each strip is the pure color (straight from the jar). To the left are tints and to the right are shades. This gives the student an opportunity to experiment with 3 different colors.

3. Once the worksheet is complete they will pick one color for their project. This can be a color they practiced or a different color. They will now paint a large 9 x 18 sheet of tagboard with tints and shades to create a smooth gradient.

4. We will watch a video on You Tube called “Words Matter”. We will talk about how just one word can make a difference to someone. We will brainstorm and create a list of uplifting and encouraging words on the white board. We will be using these words as inspiration for the final part of the project. We will talk about our district theme “Attitude determines altitude, Fly High!” and how words can make us fly high.

5. We will be creating a feather out of our tints and shades paper. Students will take a feather practice worksheet. On it is an outline of a feather, a few boxes for practicing patterns and lines and an area for their word ideas. Students will practice planning out their feather using lines, designs and patterns. The designs should be symmetrical on their feather and they should only use one word.

6. After the practice is complete, students will use a feather tracer to trace the outline of a feather on their tints and shades paper with a white pencil. The dark part should be at the bottom and lighter at the top. Students will draw the vein in the middle of the feather and then add their designs and word with white pencil.

7. When their design is complete, students will cut out the feather shape.

Was the student able to create a smooth transitioning gradient using their knowledge of tints and shades?

Did the student thoughtfully design their feather using symmetry?
