Before starting this project have students research about space exploration. Use photos collected in books and on the internet for inspiration.

1. Trace plate on cardboard and cut out.

2. Paint the cardboard using acrylic paint to represent space. This will act as the base for your background. Dabbing paint with a crumpled sheet of paper using multiple colors can help students achieve the look of a galaxy. Use photo references for color ideas.

3. Cut out a large hole in the center of the paper plate. Then paint the remaining piece of the plate with acrylic. This will act as the window to your space shuttle.

4. Create your space scene using cardboard. Draw, color and cut out the pieces. Before gluing, figure out the placement of your pieces to be glued to the background created in step 2.

5. Place the paper plate on top of your background and staple shut.
