THE PLAN
Students will understand the art of repoussé, what it is, how to make it and recognize it as a form of art.

Students will create a low relief image in metal using the process of repoussé.

Students will create a variety of actual textures onto a metal sheet and then recreate the textures visually continuing patterns into a border.

Students will understand how line, pattern and texture can be created in visual design and incorporate those elements in their repoussé pieces.

Metal sheets:I buy a 50 foot roll of 36 gauge aluminum from School Specialty

wood stylus, pencils, cardboard, black and white card-stock, color pencils, permanent markers, india ink or black acrylic paint, steel wool

Need these materials? Visit Blick!

1. Introduce lesson with PowerPoint of images and background information and history of repoussé. Pass around samples, allow students to feel the metal.

2. Demonstrate how to push and pull the metal on padded felt or cardboard using stylus sticks. Go over safety procedure using the sharp metal sheets and precautions to prevent damage to the metal.

3. Show example of patterns, encourage students to be creative but keep patterns simple.

4. Students begin their artwork tooling their metal.

5. Demonstrate how to continue their patterns to the background card stock.
6. Students will have a multitude of choices in how to present their artwork:
• On white background
• On black background
• Antiqued metal effect
• Keep plain
• Color with permanent markers

7. Use gold/silver/or black sharpies to continue design to background.

Do the actual textures/patterns of the metal match to the visual texture/patterns of the background?

When creating the textures on the metal were they pushed from both sides?

Do you have areas that are level, pushed down, and pushed up? Are these areas deep and worked enough?

Is the project neat?
