Recycled Jewelry Art

This is an art lesson plan that uses recycled materials to create a piece of jewelry art. The students look at Egyptian art as an inspiration for their necklaces. This lesson incorporates personal symbols and could include line/shape.

THE PLAN
3 sessions; 45 minutes per session

1. SWBAT create their own symbol inspired by Egyptian art.
2. SWBAT create their own colors, lines, and shapes in a pattern.
3. SWBAT create their own mixed media art.

1. Plastic Containers (needs to be 5 or 6 type. The # is indicated by the recycle symbol)
2. Paper
3. Scissors
4. Sharpie Markers
5. Pencil
6. Erasers
7. String
8. Magazines
9. Bags
10. Rulers

Session 1
1. Explain Egyptian Art, Gods/Goddess, Symbols using the PPT. (10-15 min)
- Demo how students will cut the plastic to make their pendant and beads.
- Demo how to sketch their jewelry design.
- Demo how to put their design on the plastic and color it in.
2. Have students do the same (30 min)
- Clean up (5 min)
Teacher will take home their plastic designs and bake them at 325 degree oven and bring them back to school.

Session 2
1. Review art and symbols. (10 min)
- Demo how to string their pendant onto the string.
- Demo how to make a paper bead from old magazines.
2. Students will string and them make 4 paper beads.

Sesson 3
1. Review art and symbols. (5 min)
2. Students finish making beads and stringing them.

Students will fill out an exit slip with the following questions:

1. What group of people did we get our inspiration for creating their jewelry from?
2. What is it called when you repeat colors, lines or shapes?

1. I made sure students had a bag to store the pieces they cut from the plastic containers. Labeled with names so their jewelry when baked wouldn't get mixed up.

2. Try and make sure students add lots of color turns out much better.

3. I collected the used plastic salad containers from the lunchroom for the plastic. Just make sure it is 5 or 6. You can get 2 students projects from 1 salad container.
