1. practice drawing monsters.
- brainstorm animals that could look like monsters ( spiders, lizards..)
- texture, brainstorm what kind of texture the monster can have, ( furry, scales...)
do 4-5 ideas (day 1)

2. Paint the papers.
-paint one paper using watered down black paint, paint lines across the paper to create different shapes, make some lines go off the paper. LINE =SHAPE Tell them to only paint LINES that will connect or go off the edge of the paper, they are not painting large areas of black!
- mix the 3 secondary colors from the 3 primary colors. You can show the youtube video and the kids can mix and paint along. ( Karen williams, color mixing with the primary colors) Have then paint shapes on the paper with each color (day 2)

3. use chalk pastels to color in the shapes on the paper that they painted the lines on. ( start with the lightest color first, lay it in the shape, then blend with finger to rub it into the fiber of the paper. that way it wont need to be sprayed with fix)
- on the back of the paper they will draw the monster to fill the page, cut it out and glue it to the other painted paper.

4. use oil pastels to create some patterns and designs on the monsters. Talk about patterns, how lines and shapes are used to create patterns. Explain how the pattern can help the eye “move or take a walk” through the art. Talk about CONTRAST and using pastel colors that are different from the paint color they will be drawing on. If they want to draw with a yellow pastel, do it on a DARK color, draw a dark color on top of a LIGHT color, this will create contrast. Start by outlining the monster with a black pastel. Add the patterns, and other details!

5. tell the story. Students will write a descriptive paragraph , explaining the monster, its texture, and any special features, like breathing fire, flying....

students will fill out an exit slip with the following questions.
Describe your monster. Its shape, texture, and other features it may have!

What was some thing you learned by doing this?

Draw one of the patterns you used in your monster,
