THE PLAN
• Students will demonstrate an understanding of overlapping shapes by creating an abstract composition of dancing ribbons.
• Students will create dimension and depth by using varying line thicknesses and shading techniques.
• Students will demonstrate an understanding of warm and cool color schemes by using those schemes in their artwork.

• 9”x12” drawing paper
• Pencils
• Erasers
• Colored pencils

1. Teacher uses selected works by Wassily Kandinsky to introduce the concepts of energy and movement in artwork.
2. Teacher shows a finished example of project to clarify objectives.
3. Teacher distributes supplies, possibly with student help.
4. Students sketch ribbon shapes lightly with pencil. At this time, students should not be concerned with which ribbons overlap each other.
o Ribbons should go from one edge of the paper all the way to another edge.
o Ribbons should vary in thickness as they cross the page, indicating a sense of dimension.
o Ribbon composition should display energy and movement with expressive lines.
5. After sketching, students determine how the ribbons will be intertwined by using an eraser to erase the line segments of ribbons that will be underneath other ribbons.
6. Students color the ribbons using either a warm color scheme (red, orange, yellow) or a cool color scheme (green, blue, purple).
o Students should use shading techniques to create depth and dimension. Example: Where one ribbon lies beneath another, the tone should be darker. Where a ribbon rises up over the one beneath it, the tone should be lighter.
7. Teacher initiates cleanup procedures.

• Do the ribbons go from one edge of the paper all the way to another edge?
• Do the ribbons vary in thickness as they cross the page, indicating a sense of dimension?
• Does the composition display energy and movement with expressive lines?
• Did the student color the ribbons using either a warm color scheme (red, orange, yellow) or a cool color scheme (green, blue, purple)?
Did the student use shading techniques to create dept and dimension?

• Warm Colors – colors that appear to come forward in space (red, orange, yellow)
• Cool Colors – colors that appear to recede in space (green, blue, purple)
