Painting the northern lights

Students will learn watercolor techniques of wax resist, and wet on wet. They will create a composition of the northern lights with a collaged object that belongs at the north pole.

THE PLAN
3 sessions; 40 minutes per session

SWBAT: define wax resist
SWBAT: paint wet on wet
SWBAT: understand the northern lights

1. watercolors
2. paintbrush
3. watercolor paper
4. drawing paper
5. pencil
6. scissors
7. glue
8. oil pastels
9. white crayon

2. use white crayon to draw a horizon line, color below the horizon line with the crayon.

3.wet the sky and lay on the paint. remind them to DRAW with the paint, do not blend it!

4. place a blue color on the ground over the white crayon.

Day 2 and 3

1. look at pictures of penguins or other animals from the north pole. Practice drawing some.

2. Pick the best one to color in with oil pastels'

3. cut it out and collage it to the dry painting.

I do a verbal chat with the class as we finish.
