students will create self portraits using a variety of materials, while learning the correct placement of the facial features and doing some practice drawings using expression.

THE PLAN
3 sessions; 40 minutes per session

SWBAT: mix skin tones from the 3 primaries and white
SWBAT: place the features of the face in the correct spot
SWBAT: use line and color to express emotion

1.pencil
2.oil pastels
3. white drawing paper 12 x18
4. 3 primary colors of tempera paint, white too,
5.6X12 scrapbook fancy papers,
6. various colors of 12 x 18 construction paper,
7. glue
8. scissors
9. scratch paper
10. black crayon

1. practice drawing 5-10 different eyes, noses and mouths.
2. practice drawing the face using correct placement. follow this video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68LcF12Fb2U
3.paint skin tones on 12 x 18 white paper, mix the 3 primarys( more yellow, less magenta and smaller amount of cyan) and white and paint the shape of the face.
4.The next session draw with black crayon the features of the face with the expression they pick.
5. cut it out
6. use the fancy paper to cut a "u" shape for the neck and shoulders
7. glue the neck down, then the face to overlap a little.
8. add color with the oil pastels.Make sure to add the expressive lines to the background paper. lines that express the emotion.
9. the last session, finish adding details with the oil pastels, add hair, and make sure to COLOR THE EYES! have the white, the colored part and the pupil, you can even add a highlight with a dot of white paint!
