Middle [6th-8th] Unit Plan

Banksy & Dismaland

Created on March 27, 2018 by MrsImpey

I use this research project in the beginning of my graffiti unit for 7th grade art. Students learn what we know about Banksy and that graffiti is more than just vandalism on a train car. Students learn how to do research from websites and can either create a poster to present or a Google Slide presentation.

THE PLAN
8 sessions; 40 minutes per session

...identify and discuss the current event that their Dismaland attraction is about.
...offer and support their own opinion about the attraction.
...collaborate with a partner to create a presentation to use to educate their classmates.

If your students have their own devices and use Google, they can create their presentation right in Google Slides. If you they do not have access to their own devices, this can be done as an "old school" presentation, with students preparing their words to go along with a poster they create.

On the first day, I go over who Banksy is with students and they take notes in their visual journals. I will print out image for them to glue in from the presentation as well.

On the second day, I present the research project to them, and then I show them a sample presentation (which is included on the slide show). I have the packets printed out and give those out, have students pair up, and then let each pair choose an attraction from Dismaland to research.

I give students 3-4 days in class to research as necessary, helping them learn how to read through articles to find information, and do searches based on key words and context.

Students work in class by creating a Google Slide presentation. Once everyone is done, they present to the others and they take notes. I do give a quiz on this to ensure they are paying attention.

Rubric is in the packet.
