THE PLAN
4 sessions; 45 minutes per session

SWBAT to define form.
SWBAT to define shape.
SWBAT to define texture.
SWBAT to create a 3D room with table, chair, walls, windows.

1. paper
2. pencil
3. eraser
4. Blender 3D software for mac or pc. Link below for free download.

6. computer

1. Students take photo references of real blocks. They create an asymmetrical sculpture. They use their phone cameras or their school issued iPad to take photos from 4 different views of the blocks. Top, and 3 sides. Review form, texture, and shape in class. (30 min)

2. Students import the photos to their computer. Then they use them as references to create a 3D replica of them in Blender.
a. We go over the user interface of the software.
b. Quick key commands. (10-15 min)

3. Then students start to use Blender to recreate the building blocks. (2 - 45 min classes)

Students will be assessed based on the attached rubric.

Here are some Youtube videos I created to give students an basic for using Blender.

1. How to save blender file: https://youtu.be/1apCcl66t44
2. Blender Guru user interface: https://youtu.be/JYj6e-72RDs
I can't take credit for creating this video. Created by Blender Guru. I don't show the whole video just enough to get started.
3. How to subdivide in Blender: https://youtu.be/NT2nwy2HIEE
4. How to add material in Blender:
https://youtu.be/a50gAtRf948
5. How to add image as texture in Blender:
https://youtu.be/bdo1JnsW7PY

Students need this chunked down. I really had to have them go over interface and then play around with it. The students have a hard time understanding 3D space in Blender. They have to look at their 3D model at more then 1 angle or when they switch views objects positioned correctly. That's why I have the students take multiple photos of the blocks. The blocks are the starting point. Then they add a table, chairs, wall, window. My high school students really enjoyed this lesson.

THE STANDARDS

Visual Arts Standard 1:
Understanding and applying media, techniques, and processes

[9-12 Proficient] Students conceive and create works of visual art that demonstrate an understanding of how the communication of their ideas relates to the media, techniques, and processes they use
[9-12 Proficient] Students apply media, techniques, and processes with sufficient skill, confidence, and sensitivity that their intentions are carried out in their artworks

Visual Arts Standard 6:
Making connections between visual arts and other disciplines

[9-12 Proficient] Students compare the materials, technologies, media, and processes of the visual arts with those of other arts disciplines as they are used in creation and types of analysis
