THE PLAN
• Students learn about line, shape, and space through the art form of doodling.
• Students learn about the English artist, Mr. Doodle.
• Students discover street art and discuss their opinions on graffiti.
• Students demonstrate their understanding through the creation of a doodle in the style of Mr. Doodle.

Paper, black pens in different points,

pencils optional

1. Introduce lesson with PowerPoint focusing on Mr. Doodle.
2. Demonstrate proper ways to use pens, thick and thin lines, coloring in with markers.
3. Begin in one spot on the paper and start drawing doodles. Create as many doodles as you like… the only rule is that no doodles should overlap or interfere with any other doodles.
4. If you wish, you can keep the doodles the same. In other words, draw only geometric shapes (i.e. squares, triangles, circles etc.) or draw only organic shapes (squiggly “natural” shapes).
5. You may use solid color, lines, cross hatching, dots, dashes… whatever you like.
6. Project may be kept black and white or color.
7. Mr. Doodle has many videos on YouTube, I like to play them while students are working. Most are kid appropriate however I think there were one or two I would not show to elementary students. Check first. There are many other artists who also post videos of their doodling I like to show them as well.

Did the student use a variety of lines?
Did the student fill the space?
Did the student avoid overlapping their lines?
Is the artwork neat?

Connections can be made with street art and graffiti.

Some of Mr. Doodle's videos tell a story. Optional students can write an imaginative tale to describe their doodling. It is extra great if you could get their class room teachers to work on the writing while the art teacher works on the visual. Time saver!
