DAY 1 - PREP WORK

1. Have students look at examples of leaves during the fall to use as inspiration. You can also have students bring a few leaves from home.

2. Sketch the outline of leaves on sheets of white paper or heavy cardstock. Start with at least 4 sheets per student.

3. Using the examples of leaves students have with them select the appropriate colors. Various shades of reds, browns, oranges, greens, and yellows works best.

4. With watercolor pencils scribble a few different colors on the leaves that the students drew. Then go over it with a wet paintbrush to activate it, allowing the colors to blend into one another. Give the paper time to dry.

DAY 2 - CONSTRUCTION

1. Cut out the center of a paper plate. Discard the center or save it for a future project.

2. Bend a piece of pipe cleaner into a loop and staple it to the back of the plate.

3. Cut out the leaves and staple them onto the outer edge of the paper plate, making sure the leaves overlap each other to hide the staples.

DAY 3 - FINISHING TOUCHES

1. Use this day to create more leaves if students don't have enough to cover their paper plate.

Use blow dryers to cut drying time in half.

Before stapling their leaves onto the paper plate students can scribble patterns on the leaves using white, brown or black gel pens.
