Value Cake

Create a simple painting of a cake while teaching the concept of value, tints, and shades.

THE PLAN
1 session; 90 minutes per session

Students will understand the concept of tints and shades as it applies to color value

Students will learn about Wayne Thiebaud, pop artist

Paper, acrylic paint (one color, white, black), brushes, water, pencils

Teacher introduces artist Wayne Thiebaud through examples of his artwork or short video (linked)

Teacher demonstrates how to draw a simple cake on a sheet of paper, and students copy teachers drawing

Teacher introduces concept of tints and shades as it applies to value. Teacher demonstrates how to mix paint to make tints and how to mix color to make shades.

Teacher leads students with a guided lesson (students do what teacher does) of painting the cake with tints and shades.

Did students paint the cake using tints and shades? Do students understand concept of value?
