1. Student learn about Chidi Okoye and Pablo Picasso. Use teacher-made PowerPoint and posters.
2. Lead students in a class discussion asking them to compare and contrast the two artists.
3. Demonstrate how to draw an abstract portrait.
4. Students can practice their drawings using their sketchbooks.
5. Drip glue on to paper and let dry. This will create the line texture that can be seen in Okoye's paintings.
6. Students draw the outline of their drawing with pencil on their paper.
7. Student paint with acryllics.
8. Using small brushes students outline their lines and shapes.
9. Lead students in a final critique.

This unit would be great to do before a unit on African mask-making or sculpture. Chidi has numerous examples of both on his site.

I emailed Chidi to ask him what he used to create texture in his paintings and this is his response:

"...glue alone is not enough to give you the desired texture. You have to add volume to the glue with blended paper or tissue paper is good or plaster of paries. Mix throughly with glue to your right consistency. it will give you a worling material for textures. You may chose to by jell from artstores for your texture. It depends on the surface you wnt to use for your paintings"
