Jelene Morris: Poptoons

Jelene Morris is an artist from Columbia, South Carolina, her paintings are based on the world of childlike characters and considers her art a combination of Pop Art and Cartoons, forming the name "Poptoon".

THE PLAN
1. Students learn about the South Carolina artist, Jelene Morris and create colorful abstract portraits in her style.
2. Students compare/contrast her art with Pablo Picasso in a class discussion.
3. Students understand the concept of abstract art.

1. Introduce the art of Jelene Morris with a teacher-made PowerPoint presentation.

2. Have students look at Jelen's portraits and point out any characteristics that are abstracted.

3. Ask students if they can think of other ways to abstract a face.

4. Look at some work by Pablo Picasso and have students compare and contrast the two artists.

5. Demonstrate how to draw an abstract face as well as painting techniques and color mixing.

6. Remind students that they are drawing and painting on large paper, they need to draw large to fill up the space.

7. Students paint their silly portraits, remind students that they do not have to use realistic colors. If they want their face to be blue - great!

8. After their paintings have dried use a smaller brush to outline lines and shapes with black paint and initial their work in the bottom left corner.


Curriculum Connections: You could tie this unit with any class learning about economics or money and use Jelene's website as examples of artists make money. Not only does she sell her paintings, but she has turned her art into other products as well.
