Elementary [1st-5th] Lesson Plan

Creating Mood through Color

Created on November 28, 2012 by Karimarie

Second grade students will learn about the artwork of abstract artist Wasilly Kandinsky. Students will know Kandinsky was often influenced by music when he created his abstract art, often naming his paintings “Composition”. Students will understand artists can use color to create a mood within a piece of art. Warm colors often portray happiness, while cool colors often portray sadness. Students will be influenced by the music of Scott Joplin and Beethoven while using warm and cool colors to convey a particular mood. Students will learn how music and art can be integrated together to create a unique composition.

* Second grade students will be introduced to abstract art, and the work of Kandinsky, who is considered the first abstract artist. Students will learn that Kandinsky was often inspired by music while he created art. Artists just like musicians create compositions. How are they the same? How are they different?

* Students will discuss how artists use warm and cool colors to create emotion within a piece of art. Warm colors show happiness, and cool colors show sadness.

* Students will listen to the music of Scott Joplin and use warm colors (red, orange, yellow) to create an abstract composition using only shapes, lines, and color. After students have completed their drawing with oil pastels, they will apply a watercolor wash in warm colors for the background.

* Students will create a second drawing while they listen to the music of Beethoven using only cool colors (blue, green, purple). They will create an abstract composition using only shapes, line and colors. After students have completed their drawing with oil pastels they will apply a watercolor was in cool colors to the background.

* After all students have completed the project as a class we will look as each other’s drawings. We will discuss how different they look even though we were all inspired by the same drawings.

Students will be assessed on a scale of 1-5. 1 being below average, 5 being above average. Students will be assessed on how well they grasp the concept of non objective art. Students should have only drawn different kinds of lines and shapes in their artwork.
