Mexican Folk Art Mirrors

The second project in my Mexican Folk Art unit for 6th grade. Students will learn about mosaics as well as repousse/chasing.

THE PLAN
4 sessions; 40 minutes per session

1. SWBAT explain and do the process of embossing.
2. SWBAT create art with radial symmetry.
3. SWBAT identify the characteristics of Mexican folk art.

1. Metal
2. Wood carving tools
3. Colored tagboard
4. Sticky mosaic squares

1. Review Mexican folk art
2. DEMO the repousse and chasing process.
3. Give students 2 days to design and complete their metal mirror.
4. DEMO how to cut out a border for the mirror. Review radial symmetry. Give students 2 days to design the mirror frame with a mosaic.

I did this lesson with the sticky mosaic squares because we needed to move onto the next project. If you had more time, you could definitely spend more time ont he mosaic part, whether by having the students paint and cut their own mosaic pieces out of painted paper, or by doing a drawn frame.
