Endangered Merged Animal Posters

Based on Eric Carle's book 'The Mixed-Up Chameleon', students will take the characteristics of various animals to create an new endangered species. Students will then create an advertising poster to help save their new animal.

THE PLAN
4 sessions; 45 minutes per session

1. Given a Powerpoint with images of merged animals, students will effectively critic various
images of merged animals and discuss the importance of endangered animals.
2. Given a handout and a Powerpoint based on artist Barbra Krueger, students will actively
discuss the importance of an art designer and including text within works of art.
3. Using knowledge of endangered animals, students will draw a neatly designed Awareness
poster for their newly created merged animal.
4. Using color pencils & markers, students will successfully color their Endangered Merged
Animal Posters.

Pencils, Erasers, 12 x 18 Drawing Paper, Colored Pencils and Sharpies.

1. Given a Powerpoint with images of merged animals, students will effectively critic various images of merged animals by identifying the species of animals that are merged together.
2. Given a handout on artist Barbra Krueger, students will actively discuss what the career of an art designer entails.
3. Given a Powerpoint based on art created by artist Barbra Krueger, students will actively discuss the importance of including text within works of art.
4. Using knowledge of animal extinction, students will actively discuss what should be included on an Endangered Species Informational poster.
5. Using knowledge of how to create a quick sketch, students will successfully sketch their merged animal and habitat information into a poster design.
6. Given a discussion on poster design, students will successfully transfer their sketch of their merged animal and habitat information onto a mini poster.
7. Given a discussion of color theory, students will discuss how to choose what colors to make their posters.
8. Given a demonstration on how to blend with colored pencils, students will begin adding color to their Animal Awareness poster.
9. Given knowledge of coloring and outlining, students will complete their Animal Awareness poster using Color Pencils and Black Markers.

Students will be assessed based on classroom critique of which animal the class should choose to 'save'.
