Prismacolor Food

Students will learn about the many forms of art and how it appears everywhere, even in our food! They will be able to find a picture or even take one of their own pictures of a beautiful plate of food, then re-create it using Prismacolors to blend and make a beautiful food art picture.

THE PLAN
5 sessions; 50 minutes per session

1. SWBAT identify art in various forms and replicate an effective piece of art based on the culinary arts.
2. SWBAT properly blend and use Prismacolors, focusing on highlights, shadows, textures, and small details.

1. Have intro lesson on culinary arts being a visual art. Show photos, power point, etc.
2. Have students choose a picture from magazine or one they took themselves of a beautiful plate of food.
3. Have them sketch out the basic shapes of the picture then use prismacolors to blend and fill in the proper colors to give a realistic feel. (make this guided practice and monitor students work, help and demonstrate blending and leaving in highlights and adding shadows.

Students will be graded on work ethic (participating the whole time, using time wisely) and the effectiveness of their ability to use the prismacolors into an effective food picture.

I have kept this lesson for 5 years because the kids love food, and love to color, so putting those two together and helping them blend carefully to make realistic looking food art is a winner! Just be prepared for the groans of "now I'm hungry" and you will be fine!
