1. During Instruction, ask students where the country Azerbaijan is. If students don't know, show them. Once you show them Azerbaijan, have a student locate where they are on the map.
2. Take the time to show students the American flag and the Azerbaijan flag. Take a few minutes to compare/contrast the two flags.
3. Explain to students that the country of Azerbaijan has a very special celebration every year at the beginning of May to celebrate the arrival of spring.
4. Inform students that the people of Azerbaijan believe that the blooming flowers represent a spirit of hope and renewal.
5. Show students the various types of flowers and brainstorm all the different shapes you could use to create different flowers.
6. Explain that today, in America we have an "Azerbaijan America Alliance" and that we are going to create beautiful images of flowers today portraying the celebration of flower day, as well as our friendship with Azerbaijan.
7. Encourage students throughout their independent work time to create all different types of flowers, as well as symbols of each country such as the flags.
8. At the end of class, bring all students together to look at their classmates artwork. Ask students to share a piece they like, and also tell why they like it using proper line, shape, and color vocabulary.

1. Verbal Assessment through step 8 critique.

This lesson is a great way to teach students a bit about a culture and country that they may not already know much about. Consider contacting the Azerbaijan American Alliance for information about the 2014 Flower Day Celebration at the National Mall in Washington, DC!
