1. Show images of Jim Dine's series of painted hearts and briefly discuss his work.

2. Students will draw a symmetrical heart in the middle of a 12x12 white paper.

3. Discuss warm colors versus cool colors.

4. Guide students in using cool colored crayons to add diagonal lines to divide the inside of the heart.

5. Guide students in using warm colored crayons to add a variety of decorative lines around the outside of the heart.

6. Review watercolor painting procedures and expectations (paint cups must stay in tray, wipe brush on edge of paint cups to avoid drips, paint should flow on the paper, be gentle with the brush-no scrubbing, wash brush between colors, paint slow to stay inside the lines, paint solid to leave no white spots).

7. 1/2 of the students will begin by painting inside the heart with warm colors (paint on top of the cool colored crayon lines) meanwhile the other 1/2 will paint the area outside the heart with cool colors (paint on top of the warm colored crayon lines). Encourage students to explore mixing and blending colors on their papers.

8. Students will then swap tables to paint the other portion of the picture with the opposite colors.

Projects assessed with the following checklist:
-Symmetrical heart drawn in the middle of the paper
-Filled the inside of the heart with diagonal lines (using cool colored crayons)
-Used a variety of lines to "bubble" around the heart to fill the background (using warm colored crayons)
-Pressed hard with the crayons so they will resist the watercolor paint
-Warm colors painted inside the heart
-Cool colors painted outside the heart
-Made best attempt to paint inside the lines
