What are you doing to celebrate Youth Art Month? I've created celebratory/advocacy bulletin boards at my schools and will have a student from each school represented at the KS YAM exhibition.

At our school we have an evening in March called LAMP where we celebrate Library, Art, Music, and P.E.
Students rotate to and from stations. I pick an artist every year that we focus on. Last year it was Pop-Artist Andy Warhol. Each grade made an artwork inspired by Warhol. 4th grade made soup can drawings, 3rd grade made shoe prints, 1st grade cat's based off the book "Uncle Andy's cats, 5th grade made self portraits, Kindergarten created flowers, and lastly 2nd grade made cow wallpaper paintings.
I had a friend come dressed as Andy Warhol and the students had to fill out a scavenger hunt questionnaire. One of the parts of the scavenger hunt was to find Andy and get his signature.
In the art room we created labels to soup cans. (We collected soup cans for weeks!) The students used them for pencil containers.
This year the focus is Vincent Van Gogh and I still am working on getting my "Vincent" for the evening.
It has been a huge hit. Lots of work- but so worth it!

This is the first year I will be doing YAM activities. Here are my plans:

    1. The first week in March will be an art spirit week:
    Monday: Wear primary colors.
    Tuesday: Wear secondary colors.
    Wednesday: Wear complementary colors.
Thursday: Wear a warm or cool colored outfit.
    Friday: Crazy patterns day.

    2. The 2nd Friday in March will be dress like a piece of pop art day (wear popular logos, stripes and polka-dots, etc.)

    3. The 3rd Friday will be dress like your favorite artist/artwork day, which is our big dress up day. I will be sending home little packets to give ideas for students.

    4. I've asked each elementary teacher to choose an artist, read a book in class, and do a follow up project in class. I will then do a project in art based on that artist too.

    5. I am going to have a YAM bulletin board where students and teachers can write their favorite art project/memory on the board.

    6. Finally, I plan on having a daily art trivia question to have students answer. The winner each day will get a sketchbook and/or watercolor paint/colored pencils, etc.

Next year, I would like to do a family art night as well, but I don't have the time to plan that this year.
