Animation lesson that teaches stop motion animation technique of using photography to create frames. Students work in groups to create their lego stop motion animation.

THE PLAN
3 sessions; 45 minutes per session
1. SWBAT define animation and stop motion animation.
2. SWBAT define shape.
3. SWBAT define space.
4. SWBAT to create an example of stop motion animation using lego figures.
5. SWBAT define a storyboard.

Session 1
1. Watch video example of lego stop motion animation. Prior to this students had a lesson on 2D animation.
- Discuss movie example & explain stop motion animation (10 min)
- Break into group & work on a storyboard for the animation. 4 images and text about their story. (25 min)
- Create their background for their animation. (10 min)
Session 2
1. Review and demo how to use their storyboard as a guide, lego figures, and use the digital camera to create their frames. (10 min)
- Finish backgrounds (depends on the group some didn't need time for this)
2. Use the digital cameras to take their frames.
- 12 frames per sec is the rule. (35 min)
Session 3
Prior to this session I put all the photos taken by students and put them into the student folders at school. This session is in the computer lab.
1. Review stop motion animation. Demo how to use movies maker to put all their frames together. (10 min explain, 35 min for students to work)
- Work from pre saved template
- Can work individual or teams
- Intro page, manage duration times and end credits
- Add sound
Students will be assessed based on review questions that they answer with thumbs up or down.
I find that students often run into difficulties working together. I really try and encourage students to compromise. Also when they are working together I try and make sure I count off time for them for time management purposes.
You don't have to use legos. You could use modeling clay. Or a whiteboard and dry erase markers. Also you could use the students as the figures and take photos of them.
Also check out youtube videos for tutorials on how to use movie maker. There's a lot of resources. Try and have a template for the students. That saves time. I have a template with intro and credit page.
