1. Demo how to draw geometric shapes to create their own imaginary or real creature drawing. (45 min.)
- pass out burlap and make sure it fits the paper size
- draw shapes large to make creature using sharpie markers
- entire drawing is larger than their hand
- place burlap over the drawing and trace on to the burlap with sharpie marker
3. Demo how to thread tapestry needle (45 min or 2-45 min sessions depends on the age)
- show basic stitches: running, satin, french knot
- have students follow the line of their drawing to create their outline of the creature.
- show how to double knot
4. Review procedures and introduce the sewing machine and parts. (45 min)
- demo how to make a straight stitch and back stitch.
- pick fabric
- turn stitching and fabric right sides together.
- stuff and discuss textures
- sew shut.
- color in the burlap with washable markers.

Students will have a Q&A review. Each student must be able to identify the steps of sewing on the machine. Review stitches.

I find that with the K group you may need to thread the yarn onto the needle for them. Also the students that get it quicker can go around and aid other students as well to speed things up. The students can also use their original drawing to help them work out their color choices.

Do you think modified pipe cleaners would work for the needle? Or would it be too bendy?
