Demonstrate how to create a grid by converting a 1 inch by 1 inch to a larger 5X5 (or larger depending on size and proportion of character chosen)
Discuss color schemes. Students may use original colors of character or use a particular color scheme.
1. Print out Character
2. Create 1X1 grid on print out
3. Create larger grid on butcher paper
4. Draw out character using the grid.
5. Erase grid inside the character--leaving character only
6. Paint character

Students are assessed on ability to create grid, drawing character as close as possible and paint design and neatness.

We talk about animation. We discuss cartooning. Students study Walt Disney and watch a short bio on his characters and visions.

You can go check out examples on my blog:

This is just one project we use while studying cartooning. The grid helps the students understand the anatomy of characters as well as giving them another tool in drawing. Some students use the grid system on later assignments to help them draw correctly.
