Have you tried the version which starts with a square to create interlocking tiles? Once created you can choose a 2 color design with analagous or complimentary colors.
Creating Tessellations with middle school students. Stresses symmetry and polygons. Includes a worksheet to walk students through the create of an equilateral triangle-based template.
