Matryoshka Doll painting

Students learn about overlapping to create space and Russian art by creating three different sized Matryoshka doll paintings. This is also a review of warm and cool colors and patterns.

THE PLAN
4 sessions; 60 minutes per session

1. SWBAT identify Matryoshka dolls as Russian art form.
2. SWBAT understand how overlapping creates a sense of space in their artwork.
3. SWBAT use pattern to create variety.
4. SWBAT use warm or cool colors in their background.
5. SWBAT create their own Matryoshka family.
6. SWBAT use tempera cakes appropriately.

1. tracing templates of three different size Matryoshka shapes.
2. Pencils and erasers
3. Tabloid (11 by 17) or 12 by 18 inch white paper.
4. Tempera cakes in a variety of color
5. Paint brushes in a variety of sizes and water in cups.
6. Black Sharpies (fine and ultrafine).
7. Visual resources of patterns and Matryoshka dolls.
8. Scissors and glue

1. Students watch a slideshow of Matryoshka dolls while the teacher reads facts or a lecture about the Russian art form.
2. Students trace the three size shapes in their sketchbook to create sketches of their Matryoshka family and patterns.
3. Teacher leads a discussion about space and how overlapping creates a sense of it in their art.
4. Students create their three dolls with pencil, traced in black Sharpie, then painted with tempera cakes.
5. Teacher gives a demonstration on warm and cool color background.
6. Students paint background, then cut out their dolls.
7. Students assemble their collage, overlapping their characters to create space.
8. Students self assess using rubric.

Students will self assess using rubric. They will also show knowledge gained by recalling facts about Matryoshka dolls. Teacher will grade using same rubric.
