THE PLAN

The Students will have the ability to create an aesthetic composition using Elements and Principle of Design.

1. Using Feldman's Model of Art Criticism evaluate a work of art. Focus on Intent and Interpretation. I choose to use "We don't Need another Hero" by Barbera Kruger. I usually use a Kagan collaborative structure to allow optimum student engagement.

2. Describe the premise of the assignment.
-Create a work of art that communicates a Theme. (assigned at random)
-The Media is up to you
-Minimum size 10X10 Max Size 18X18
*See my attached power point

3. Randomly assign students themes to work from. Here are the ones I used.
Good vs. Evil
Rebirth
Loss
Superficial
Dreams
Destruction/Chaos
Alter ego
Struggle
Strength
Conflicted
Restrained
Deception
Autonomous

4. Divide the students into groups for a Round Robin (Kagan Collaborative Structure). In this structure, each student will spend time brainstorming ideas for each Theme. This will assist the students who art "stuck".

5. Review your rules for composition. I lean on the rule of thirds, Golden Mean, and Principles of Design.

6. Require the students to create sketches so that you can check for understanding. This will also ensure student success.

7. Allow students to work for the remaining class periods.

*TIP Continue to use daily bell work to;
-Reinforce compositional strategies
-Reinforce the use of symbols and elements to communicate ideas.

See the attached Rubric

I use this lesson for my advanced art students, but it could easily be used for high school students.

* I also use this for a final exam*
