Teacher reviews the proportions of the human face and the year long theme of "heroes". Students draw self portraits, using a mirror and accurate proportions in their sketchbooks. They have the choice of drawing themselves as a super hero, a villain or a split personality. Students trace their self portraits on drawing paper and color with choice material. The teacher reviews complementary color pairs and introduces onomatopoeia. Students choose from a pre-approved list of words to create in complementary colors bubble or jagged edge circle. Finally, the students assemble their collage, creating a newspaper background, cutting out their onomatopoeia and self portrait. They glue it onto the 11 by 17 construction paper background of their choice color and write their name on the back.

Does the student use correct facial proportions?
Did the student choose an onomatopoeia that is appropriate?
Did the student use complementary colors?
How is the craftsmanship of this collage?
Is there a sense of unity or is it chaos?

This is the last project of the year since our theme was heroes. They did a self portrait at the beginning of the year to compare their growth. Giving middle school students choice is key to student buy in.
