THE PLAN
1 session; 45 minutes per session

1. SWBAT use a grid to enlarge a drawing.
2. SWBAT translate value into color and pattern.
3. SWBAT select and utilize 3 analogous colors in their drawings.
4. SWBAT understand that working together can yield big results.

1. Grayscale copy of gridded school logo/image of mascot, cut into small sections
2. White drawing paper with matching proportion to small sections
3. Pencils
4. Erasers
5. Markers, variety of colors
6. Tape

1. Preparation pior to class
-Prepare image of school logo/mural in 3 value grayscale (black, gray, white)
-Determine size of sections, either squares or proportioned to fit rectangular paper. (I've used 9x12 inch and 6 inch square paper before)
-Add grid to image and label the back of the sections with a letter/number combination.
-Cut grid into sections .
2. Introduce assignment (5 minutes)
-Each student will select a small section and enlarge it onto the bigger paper.
-A grid can be used to help with enlarging. Fold papers in half both directions and trace lightly with pencil, which is faster than using a ruler. The sections can be further divided by marking with a pencil.
3. Use grid to sketch design in pencil.
4. Select 3 analogous colored markers
-Review analogous colors
-Students choose 3 analogous colors. They do not need to be "pure" and could be stretched to include different values like red and pink or royal blue and light blue)
5. Add color and pattern to create value
-Anything that is black on the on the original should be filled in a solid color.
-Anything that is gray should be filled in with dense pattern.
-Anything that is white should be filled in with a sparse pattern.
6. Label sections
-The easiest way is to tape the squares to the back so that the person assembling will know which way is up
7. Assemble the mural (after class)
-Sort sections into stacks by letter
-Arrange stacks in number order
-Arrange one row at a time, taping seems together
-Tape larger rows together and reinforce with packaging tape
8. Display mural in hallway

The drawings will be assessed based on craftsmanship and pattern.

1. Blog post about the first time I did this project several years ago- http://www.katiemorrisart.com/2011/02/school-logo-paper-mural.html

-The first time I did this project it was with upper elementary school students. I recently used it as a back to school project in my new position with middle and high school students.
-It's a good idea to sort out the "empty" squares so that all students have to draw part of the mural. The empty squares were filled with pattern and were given to students who finished their first section early.
-The number of students you have should help you decide on the size/number of your gridded sections.
