Around the Sketchbook in Eighty Days

Inspired by the novel Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne. Students will draw and learn about different cities and cultures around the world over the course of 80 days. A sketchbook will act as a travel journal, where students will keep their drawings and notes.

THE PLAN
10+ sessions; 60 minutes per session

1. SWBAT learn about different cities and cultures around the world.

2. SWBAT draw different cities inside a sketchbook to be turned in after 80 days.

3. SWBAT take notes about all the facts they have learned about each city inside their sketchbook.

1. Sketchbook (store-bought or handmade)

2. Pencil

3. Colored pencils/crayons

4. Markers

5. Paint (acrylic or watercolor)

Need these materials? Visit Blick!

1. Read Around the World in Eighty Days.

2. Starting with the cities visited in the book. Draw the locations inside your sketchbook. (Use photos from books or the internet for references)

3. Write down facts about each city drawn inside your sketchbook.
Include facts like:
---Population count
---Travel time by different modes of transportation
---Language spoken

4. Once done move on to other cities around the world. (They can be cities voted on in class or chosen individually.)

5. After the 80 days are up turn in sketchbook.

For students/teachers that prefer to have handmade books for this project. Simple DIY videos on how to make them.

This project is not just for elementary students, but for all ages. A year long project which also works as an introduction into plein air painting.

    Great concept!! I love sketchbook note taking for the younger grades!It'd be cool to integrate a famous artist from each city/an artist's work that refers to the city.
