2. SWBAT Produce art work which displays knowledge of balance, form and proportion
3. SWBAT Recognize and analyze design elements
4. SWBAT Identify styles, influences, and themes in art
5. SWBAT Apply the use of media skills in a problem solving context

c. cardboard
5. Plaster strips
6. Acrylic Paint
7. Tissue paper

It is easy to adapt the materials to things you have in your class room. I have done this project with paper mache paste instead of plaster strips and it turns out just as nice.

Need these materials? Visit Blick!

1. Student will create a sketch of bird before beginning (Look at birds in flight and birds standing still) (Day 1)

2. Review requirements for bird- must be able to stand , contain beak, wings, feet, can be whimsical or realistic (Day 1)

3. Demo day consists of different techniques students may use to build (showing how to make wings, how to make feet out, creating movement) (Day 2)
(the better you build and show techniques, the more successful the project is)

4. Start building using recycled material (Day 3)

5. Students continue to build for 3 days (Day 3-6)

6. Show students how to use plaster gauze (Day 7)
a. Have a bucket for the water after use so it doesn't clog your sinks
b. Precut paster strips for easier use

7. Plaster gauze 2-3 days depending on the size of the bird (put newspaper on tables) (Day 7-9)

8. Show students different decoration techniques (Day 9-12)
a. Tissue paper
b. Fabric
c. Ribbon
d. Paint (acrylic)

9. Finish birds using techniques taught

Assessment Questions given throughout the project.
1. How do you create the armature for your sculpture?
2. What are the primary and secondary colors?
3. What is more important; the process of building or the finished product?
4. Explain to me how you plan to finish your bird. What will you use? (ie fabric, paint, tissue paper, paint?
