Introduction to Japanese Patterns and Mark Making

Students will learn about Japanese printmaking, find patterns in Japanese art, and draw them in their sketchbooks.

THE PLAN
1 session; 45 minutes per session

SWBAT explain techniques used by Japanese printmakers
SWBAT demonstrate Japanese mark making techniques
SWBAT demonstrate patterns frequently used in Japanese art

1. Students will watch a video of a woodblock print
2. Students will use Chromebooks or devices to explore a website with Japanese art and draw patterns and subjects that appear regularly
3. Tables will research Japanese printmaking- When did it begin? What do repeated patterns and symbols stand for?
4. Students will draw at least 5 patterns or symbols in their sketchbooks

Every student should have at least 5 patterns or symbols drawn in their sketchbooks.
