Modern Cave Art

Students learn about prehistoric cave art and collaboratively create a cave wall sharing about their life in 2016.

THE PLAN
2 sessions; 50 minutes per session

SWBAT can explore chalk medium.
SWBAT reflect on Cave art.
SWBAT create a drawing that makes a personal connection.

1.Large craft Paper ( I bought mine at a home improvement store)
2. Chalk, charcoal, colored pencils and/or color sticks
3. Paper for stencil
4. Scissors
5. Masking tape

Day 1: Introduction to cave art (PowerPoint/Virtual tour) and practice drawing for assignment. Have students draw what they would want to share with others. What do you eat? Activities you play? Meaningful symbols? Hand print? How would you leave your mark?

Have students make a hand pritn stencil to be used on final project.

Send home a note about needing a flashlight next class.

Day 2: Create a dark space (we went to the school basement and turned out the lights). Using flashlights students draw/ record on the craft paper aka cave wall. They also add hand print using their stencil and chalk.
