Alternative Surface Painting

For advanced painting classes. After the students have a good grasp of Acrylic Paints I challenge them to paint on a non traditional surface.

THE PLAN
5 sessions; 45 minutes per session

SWBAT work with acrylic paint on alternative surface.
SWBAT compose a painting.
SWBAT identify challenges of working on non traditional materials.

1. Acrylic Paint
2. Variety of alternative surfaces ( wood boards, peg board, books, thrift store furniture, ect. )

1. Look at famous painters and paintings.
2. Discuss artist who have worked on alternative surfaces.
3. Choose an alternative surface other than canvas and paper.
4. Paint composition on the alternative surface.
5. Write a summary of your experience and note the difficulties you encountered and how you over came them.

Students will turn in their summary explaining the challenges of painting on alternative surfaces and how they over came them as well as the painting be graded based on a standard painting rubric.

A really great upper level painting assignment that allows for creativity, experimentation and exploration. Great conversations about what surfaces work best how to create an image on a non flat surface.
